Peer i Dubai
Frankie P. Postet 16.02.2010 23:50 Regnskap

Litt skriverier rundt saken:

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP)- Shahar Peer rallied to beat 15th-ranked Yanina Wickmayer of Belgium 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 in her opening match at the Dubai Tennis Championships, a year after the Israeli player had been denied a visa to the Emirates.

Authorities cited safety reasons for preventing her from playing last year, with tournament organizers saying they feared fan anger targeting Peer over Israel's three week military offensive in Gaza.

Organizers were fined $300,000 by the WTA and required to open the event to all qualifying players.

There were no signs of protests Monday as 22nd-ranked Peer scored an upset win.

Coach Pablo Giacopelli says Peer can only travel from her hotel to the tournament under rules by the United Arab Emirates.

Peer makes up for lost time in Dubai February 15, 2010

Denied a visa to take part in the event last year, Shahar Peer made a winning debut in Dubai by upsetting Yanina Wickmayer 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

"To win today, for me, was so important. I'm really happy I did it. That's why I was screaming so much at the end after I won the match. It was a very, very tough first round match and I am so happy that I won," said Peer.

"I felt very proud to be representing Israel in a country that does not recognize it.

"The attitude to me here is very warm and I feel quite safe."

According to Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz, Peer's hotel has sealed off her floor for security reasons, and her movement is restricted to the hotel and the tournament site.

Peer klar for semifinalen

Arrangørene har fått litt hodebry etter at Shahar Peer nådde semifinalen:

Peer's run creates pressure for Dubai organizers February 18, 2010
Unable to take part in the event last year when she was denied entry into the country, Israeli Shahar Peer has reached the semifinals of Dubai with a 7-5, 3-0 win over Na Li.

Peer has so far played her matches on outside courts with heavy security, but organizers will find it difficult not to schedule her semifinal clash against defending champion Venus Williams for the main stadium. A crowd of about 5,000 is expected for the session.

"The tournament has said that security is paramount, and it is the security and police who dictate what happens, so we will have to wait and see," tournament referee Alan Mills was quoted by AFP as saying.

Last year, government officials cited political tensions stemming from Israel's military offensive in the Gaza strip as a prime reason for refusing Peer a visa. The incident attracted worldwide attention and was largely condemned, leading to ATP pro Andy Ram being allowed to play the men's event the following week. The WTA tour subsequently secured a guarantee that Peer would be allowed to play in the future.

This year, relations are again fraught, with a group of Israeli citizens -- some allegedly dressed in tennis outfits -- suspected of killing a Hamas leader in Dubai last week.

Peer's movements have been limited to the tournament site and her hotel, where the rest of her floor has been sealed off. The 22-year-old has said she feels "safe" playing in the tournament, but may not have been be able to avoid feeling a little conspicious.

"I'm the only player that hasn't played on Centre Court," said Peer. "But whatever will be, will be. I'm not controlling it. I'm doing what I've been told and wherever I need to play, I'll play on.
